Barb Hough Roda is not only Community Liaison of LNP, she’s also a mom. And the two roles aren’t mutually exclusive.
“I care about the community, and I really love our kids,” she says.
That’s why Roda recently launched a monthly “Schools” section in LNP’s print edition. It’s a place where readers can turn to discover features about local schools, as well as student, teacher and classroom accomplishments.
LNP has always covered education issues zealously, from school board controversies to budgets and test scores, but Roda wanted to make room for the good news that doesn’t always grab the big headlines: geography bee winners and students of the month, first-graders who exceed their reading goals and high school vocalists who qualify for county chorus.
Recent issues have included everything from classroom acts of kindness and volunteerism to art students who decorated their school for the holidays.
Response has been so overwhelming that the section continues to grow, Roda says. All public, private, parochial and home schools in the county are invited to submit news.
“We want to celebrate our kids no matter what school environment they are in,” Roda says. “It’s a really great way to shine a positive light on our community and our school families.”
